Links

In this section I will be placing links to some of my favourite websites, downloads and other interesting places.

Ubuntu

Ubuntu is a linux based operating system that uses the Gnome desktop. Ubuntu is basically a full operating system with lots of tools and features included with it. The entire principle behind Ubuntu is that it needs to be user friendly and so easy to use, install and configure. I would recommend anyone try out one of this operating system and have a look as they are a lot faster and more stable as are most linux distributions than the Microsoft alternatives. If you are hesitant to place it on your computer take a look at

Gateworld.net

Gateworld.net is the most comprehensive Stargate encyclopaedia and fansite on the internet. It has a very large following of members within it forums, regularly has interviews with cast members or people that have worked on the series and has all of the most recent and up-to-date news.

VirtualBox

Virtual Box is an amazing piece of software and although not strictly a Development Tool it can be used to aid development in many different ways so I have decided to include it in this section. VirtualBox is an open source piece of software that is very similar although in my opinion a lot better than VMware or Microsoft's VirtualPC. Virtual Box is basically designed to simulate or more correctly virtualises a computer system that you can then freely install an operating system on as though it is a completely separate computer. You may be asking yourself what this gains you, well think about it, using this software you can test a completely different operating systems without having to install them on your PC as an actual operating system. This is great for testing as it lets you make sure that your software can operate across a number of different operating systems. It can also give you access to tools that are only available for other operating systems without having to restart your machine. It is also a helpful tool for testing networked software as you can simulate several machines on a single computer in a variety of operating systems. This gives you an easy way to do testing of all those nasty networked apps you create without needing hundreds of machines. Again visit the official site by clicking the link above and have a read. I will hopefully be providing a number of pre-made VirtualBox virtual machines that you will be able to just run up with an operation system on them saving you the hassle of installing the operating system yourself. Stay tuned, I'll place a link in here and in the links section to the downloads upon there completion.

Firefox

Firefox is a very powerful web browser that is fully open source and very reliable and robust. Firefox is designed for maximum security and compatibility. It is available for a large number of Operating systems including Linux, Windows and MacOS. It is a very easy browser to learn and features Tab browsing and the ability via Plug-in's to interface with a number of different applications. An example of a plug-in is FireFTP(link) which adds FTP facilities to Firefox so you don't need a separate app for FTP transfers. Some other useful plug-in's are DownItAll which is a Download manager for those of us that like doing a number of large downloads. EbayNegs is also very good and is a plug-in that will search an ebay members username for all the negative comments.
